Michael Pidgeon (26), from Dublin, thinks that Ireland can be a cruel place to grow up for anyone who is perceived as different. The referendum, in part, is about moving towards an Ireland that is more caring, compassionate and decent place.

“It’s pretty clear to me that Ireland has been a cruel and difficult place to grow up for anyone perceived as different. The word ‘gay’ was so often used to describe something bad. This referendum is about moving Ireland towards a place that’s less cruel, more compassionate. That change won’t happen without a positive vote.”
