Leo Varadkar is the Minister for Health and has been a TD since 2007. For him, a yes vote is a choice toward liberty, toward equality for all. He rightly points out the harsh discriminations that existed in Ireland in the past which we find unacceptable today; and the truth about how marriage as an institution has evolved. He also tackles firmly the myths about this vote which have been prominent lately.
“We’ve had a lot of discrimination in this country in the past, against women, against catholics, and this will be yes vote to end one more form of discrimination. Unbelievably just few decades ago a 14 year old boy could marry a 12 year old girl; twenty years ago you couldn’t divorce and remarry. Marriage is an institution which has evolved over time – and it should, because strong institutions change with the times.”
