Dave Byrne is from Bray, Co. Wicklow. In his video he shares his views on why the upcoming referendum on Equal Marriage is so important, and why he thinks it’s about our past as much as our future. He eloquently explains how a Yes vote on May 22nd will not just ensure a brighter future, it will also allow us to see our past more clearly than ever before.
“I like to think that James Connolly knew the full extent of the symbolism of his choice of Kathleen Lynn to be flag bearer. She was an educated woman, a socialist, a suffragette, a Protestant and she was a lesbian. She embodied the guarantees of equal rights and equal opportunities in the Proclamation. The idea that, nearly 100 years later, I can play a part in honouring that guarantee is a huge source of pride for me. I look on it as a privilege.”
